MDA TELETHON'S $65 MILLION BREAKS RECORDThe IAFF maintains its spot as the largest national sponsor of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) after raising a record-shattering $27,530,000 for the MDA 43rd annual Labor Day Telethon.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, I want to thank all of you that have volunteered your time and efforts to MDA in the recent months. You played an important part in raising money for MDA that will continue the fight to find a cure. The five MDA Lock Ups that were held this year helped raise over $170,000. Special thanks to the Combat Challenge Team for always coming through with volunteer drivers. I also want to recognize the other Local volunteers for their hard work at the Landry's Lock Up. That day alone we helped MDA raise over $60,000. Pass the word around to other Local members and let them know what the Lock Ups are all about and the fun to be had. As for this years Fill The Boot, you all were able to collect over $20,000. With the proceeds from Battle of the Badges and last years Fill The Boot, Local 51 was able to present MDA with a check for over $30,000 at the telethon on Labor Day. This years top intersection was George Dieter and Montwood, which raised nearly $8,000 with the west-side coming in a close second. I appreciate the on duty companies that went out and increased our visibility at the intersections letting everyone know that Fill the Boot is important to our Local and our department. Many thanks to Art Garcia, Rudy Portillo, and Earl Hayden for being intersection captains both days. It's not easy staying out in the hot sun all day let alone two. The plan is to have two drives this coming year and readdress the issue of on duty collecting with the new fire administration in early 2009. Fraternally, Hector A. Padilla Trustee, Local 51
